Phnom Penh (FN), July 21 – Cambodian government in cooperation with a Wild life Conservation Society (WCS) has sold the first Carbon Credit of the Climate Change Reduction Project in the 292 690 ha wild life protection area in Keo Seima, Mondulkiri province, to a U.S. firm, Disney, according to an announcement by WCS yesterday.
“The sale of such a first large scale Cambodian carbon credit is an important part of our vision towards securing financial sustainability for protected areas in Cambodia. The agreement that we have signed will provide almost the whole fund to forest and communities protection,” Say Sam Al, Minister of Environment was quoted as saying in the statement.
The sold carbon credit will be placed in the volunteer carbon markets so that business firms, agencies and individuals can pay for many actions that they do and contribute to reduction of the emission of toxic gas. In the protected areas of Keo Seima, quantity and quality of carbon credit will be verified by two leading verifying systems namely the carbon and climate standard and community and biology standard.
The Ministry of Environment is scheduled to organize an event shortly to celebrate this great achievement for forest preservation in Cambodia.
