JAKARTA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. embassy to Indonesia on Thursday published a security message for its citizens following the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The recognition may spark protests, some of which have the potential to become violence, according to a statement from the embassy.

"The U.S. embassy in Jakarta reminds U.S. citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security," the statement said.

The message asks the U.S. citizen to review their personal security plans, remain aware of their surrounding, including local events, and monitor local news for updates.

"Maintain a high-level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities. Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests of demonstrations," it said.

The U.S. government announced Wednesday that it recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and plans to relocate the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Indonesia strongly condemned the decision and asked the U.S. government to reconsider it.
