Phnom Penh (FN), March 17 – Tomorrow, March 18, marks the 46th Anniversary of a military coup led by Marshal Lon Nol to overthrow former prince Norodom Sihanouk; a move that lead Cambodia to civil war and the Pol Pot Genocidal Regime, said Prime Minister Hun Sen.

In a post on his Facebook page, Prime Minister Hun Sen cited the hardship and sufferings faced by the people when the country was at war. Starting off with the military coup, Cambodia fell into civil war and was dragged into the Pol Pot Genocidal Regime. Everybody especially youth was held hostage of the civil war without any other choice. Regardless of where it was, one would either be a soldier or a servant to the regime in that particular area. A lot of people were killed, wounded and almost all properties vandalized. Then came the Pol Pot Regime that killed millions of lives and destroyed everything. We have fought for the revival of our nation and people. We have rebuilt our nation and found peace especially through the Paris Peace Agreement and lastly the Win-Win Policy.

“Even though I was one of the victims of the coup, the civil war, and the genocidal regime just like other Cambodian people until I become disabled, I am still proud to be able to contribute to leading our nation from a war-torn country to a peaceful and developed one. I hope our people will help me preserve peace, which is hard to find and is a pre-condition for a nation’s development” concluded the Prime Minister.
