Phnom Penh (FN), March 31 – Cambodia is in consideration of becoming a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, when it is encouraged to do so by the group, in view to broadening its opportunity for trade exchanges with European countries, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Tatyana Valovaya, member of the Council for Integration and Macro-Economy of the Eurasian Economic Committee met with Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Namhong this morning of March 31, to explain the procedures and benefits of joining this economic group. Tatyana Valovaya is also scheduled to meet other government officials.

The spokesperson, Chum Sounry, told the press that joining the organization would enable Cambodia to expand its opportunity for trade exchanges with many countries in Europe.

“To become a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, would be a significant opportunity for Cambodia to expand trade exchanges with European countries especially those countries in central Europe. We see that as a good contribution to further development of Cambodia’s economy, reducing poverty and improving people’s livelihood,” said the spokesperson.

The organization currently has five country members namely Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, while two ASEAN countries, Singapore and Vietnam are in the process of preparing the procedural paper works to join it, according to Sounry.
