PHNOM PENH, April 1 (FN) — The number of road fatalities in Cambodia had declined to 488 people in the first quarter of 2016, down 1.4 percent compared to the same period last year, according to a National Police report on Friday.

Some 982 cases of road accidents were reported during the January-March period this year, down 10 percent from the same period last year, the report said.

In addition, these crashes injured 1,659 others, also down 11 percent, it added.

High-speed driving attributed about 40 percent of the crashes, alcohol driving took some 13 percent, and the rest were caused by neglect driving, vehicle problems, and traffic law violation.

Road accidents are a leading cause of death in this Southeast Asian country, killing an average of six people a day.
