Phnom Penh (FN), July 26 - After a one-day hearing on 26 July 2018, the National Election Committee (NEC) decided to fine five former opposition members $2,500 each for involving in clean finger campaign According to Som Sorida, deputy secretary-general of the NEC on Thursday.

Former members of the CNRP include: Thong Savoeun, Mang Chhun, Chea Chiv, Pov Taing, and Kruy Kimsang.

These people were charged of leading a campaign to prevent people from going to vote, complained by members of CPP in Battambang province.

Som Sorida said the decision was based on the Law on the Election of Members of Parliament, Article 142.

Spokesman of Ministry of Justice Kim Santepheap on Wednesday said that publishing falsified, intimidated, or misleading news that could prevent people from going to vote subjects to six months to two years imprisonment under Cambodian penal code.

According to the spokesman, such news could even cause social disorder.

"Call for citizens not to vote or prevent them from voting violated Article 492 of the Penal Code, which will be fined between 1 million riel ($250) to 4 million riel ($1,000) and six months to two years imprisonment,” stated Kim Santepheap.
