RIO, Sep. 03 (CGTN) -- A huge fire engulfed the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night, according to local media reports.

According to Brazilian television station Globo, there was no information yet on potential deaths, injuries, cause of the fire or extent of damage at Rio's 200-year-old National Museum.

The fire broke out after visiting hours and was still raging till late Sunday night.

Representatives from the fire department have not yet responded to a request for comment.

Established in 1818, the National Museum of Brazil is the oldest scientific institution in the country with more than 20 million priceless items ranging from archaeological findings to historical memorabilia.
