PHNOM PENH (FN), June 1 – Cambodia’s Minister of Defense, Senior General Tea Banh, told the press after a meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart on June 1, 2016, that border disputes between Cambodia and Vietnam have been progressively addressed and only a few remain.

He also recalled that border disputes between the two countries are not something new but are historic issues that have existed for quite a long time.

“The border disputes between Cambodia and Vietnam have existed ever since before I was born and not something new,” said Gen. Banh. “Cambodia has been trying to solve the problems progressively and only a few that has not yet been addressed. This kind of problems is normal since Cambodia shares borders with Vietnam, and so it is unavoidable,” he added.

Gen. Banh acknowledged there has so far been criticism over the border issues from the public and certain analysts, but it is just out of their personal thinking. In the meantime, he added, there are also those who have come up with well-founded thought.

It should be recalled that in July 2015 Cambodia-Vietnam border disputes came about again when the Vietnamese side continued to violate Cambodia’s sovereignty. The resurgence of the disputes has led to creation of Cambodia-Vietnam Joint Border Committee followed by Cambodia borrowing border maps from other countries for the purpose of verifying the truth. Since then, there have been no more reports on the disputes. However, it is also unknown whether or not a final solution to the disputes has been reached.
