Phnom Penh (FN), July 13 – Investigating judge of Phnom Penh Municipal Court Seng Leang decided at 4:33 pm, of July 13, 2016 to put in detention the suspected murder of prominent political analyst Kem Ley, after the suspect was charged by the prosecutor of two criminal offenses with which he could be put behind bars the whole life.

Deputy prosecutor at the Phnom Penh Municipal court Ly Sophanna, who is assigned to handle the case, has laid two charges against the assailant, whose self-claimed name is “Chub Samlab” of intentional killing and of possessing a weapon without official permit. The interrogation finished this morning at 10:20 am.

The assailant who was chased after and arrested by police near Aeon Mall just after the attack was confirmed by Senior General Chuon Sovann, deputy police general commissioner, as the real perpetrator since police has made his arrest just in a flagrant delicto.  The man told police his name was Chub Samlab, 38, a Cambodian worker in Thailand and that he shot and killed Mr. Kem Ley because of unsettled debt. However, it seems police do not yet believe his real name is “Chuob Samlab.”

Mr. Kem Ley, a prominent Cambodian social commentator was assassinated on July 10, 2016 at 8:50 A.M. while he was having coffee in a convenience store of a gas station in Chomkarmorn District, Phnom Penh. He was shot once in the head, behind the ear, and once more on his upper arm and died instantly.
