PHNOM PENH, Dec. 30 (FN) — One garment factory worker was killed and 13 others injured when their truck got rear-ended by a speedy container lorry in southwestern Cambodia's Preah Sihanouk province, said a labor ministry statement on Friday.

The accident took place on National Road 4 at 7:15 p.m. local time on Thursday when the truck was transporting the workers from factory to their houses.

"One worker was killed and 13 others sustained light injuries in the accident," the statement said.

It said the injured workers had been rushed to a clinic for treatment and the National Social Security Fund would cover their medical expenses.

The driver of container lorry fled the scene after the fatal crash.

Transporting factory workers in open trucks to and from factories is common in Cambodia. Last Friday, some 43 garment workers were also injured when their truck overturned in southeastern Svay Rieng province due to vehicle malfunction.

The country's 6.5-billion-U.S.-dollar garment industry is composed of some 1,000 factories, employing around 750,000 workers.
