Phnom Penh (FN), Jan 5 – Cambodia has exported more than 0.5 million tons of rice to international markets in 2016, and China was the biggest market buying some 130,000 tons, according to the government report.

The report filed by Ministry of Commerce showed that Cambodia had exported a total of 542,144 tons in 2016, an increase of 0.7% compared to a year earlier which was 538,396 tons.

Among the 66 importing countries, China was the major rice importer from Cambodia. China had signed an agreement with Cambodia to buy 200,000 tons of rice starting from this year onward.

Cambodia was tapped as the second top of the world’s best rice after Thailand, who was the host of The World Rice Conference in 2016. Cambodia was consecutively awarded the world’s best rice in 2012, 2013, and 2014 held in Bali, Hong Kong, and in Cambodia respectively.

Prime Minister Hun Sen formulated rice productivity and export policy in 2011 to export 1 million ton in 2015. The goal, however, has not yet been achieved but progress in being made from year to year.
