Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 25 - The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has put a huge effort on Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway Development Project to boost trade, tourism and regional connectivity, according to the ministry’s news release.

A meeting to review the preparatory survey for the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway Development Project Study, conducted by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), was held on Tuesday under the presidency of Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport (MoPWT).

The expressway is 132 km long and requires budget of $4 billion and that it will take approximately 6 years to complete. Successfully built, the expressway boosts regional connectivity, development, and tourism, reduce time for travelling and transportation, ease traffic, and expand trade with neighboring countries.

The ministry also studied on the expressway from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville. The estimated 190-kilometer-long and 25-meter-wide expressway would be built with an investment capital of some $1.6 billion.

At the meeting, JICA recommend the ministry to establish Department of Expressway to maximize the benefits of expressway, according to spokesman of MoPWT, Varsim Soriya.

In the meeting, Sun Chanthol expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to JICA on behalf of the country for the detailed and comprehensive survey and recommendation.
