Phnom Penh (FN), Feb 20 – The National Assembly (N.A) officially enacted an amendment regarding the dissolution of political parties during the N.A’s Extraordinary Meeting on Monday morning.

The meeting was presided over by N.A’s president, Heng Samrin, Prime Minister Hun Sen, and other senior leaders despite the boycotting of the opposition party.

The enactment was made by 66 lawmakers from the ruling Cambodian People's Party of Prime Minister Hun Sen despite it was boycotted by the opposition lawmakers.

The Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), the main opposition party in Cambodia announced last Sunday that the party would boycott the meeting saying the amendment will lead a national disunity, as it does not respond to the will of the people, according to Son Chhay, CNRP lawmaker.

The amendment aims to ban any convicted politicians from running or standing as president or vice president of a political party and to dissolve that party if the crime is deemed serious.

The request to enact the new law by 60 CPP’s National Assembly members was submitted on Feb. 10, 2017, at the request of Prime Minister Hun Sen during the last National Assembly’s meeting on Jan. 31, 2017.

The original fifty articles regarding political party laws, written 20 years ago, have been altered with additional 22 amendments.
