ANKARA, Mar. 23 (Xinhua) -- Turkish top officials condemned the terror attack outside Britain's parliament Wednesday, killing five people and wounding some 40 others.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter of condolences to British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"I want to emphasize that Turkey deeply feels and shares the United Kingdom's sorrow. Turkey always stands in solidarity with the friendly and allied United Kingdom in the fight against terrorism, one of the greatest threats to international peace and security," he said.

Erdogan also expressed condolences to victims' families and British people via Twitter, wishing a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim also reacted to the incident. He said that all countries should unite on the issue of terrorism and fight it together, while also urging against double standards on the issue.

"Solely associating terrorism with Muslim countries is a gravest mistake. Terrorism is a global catastrophe," Yildirim said.

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement late Wednesday, stressing that Turkey will maintain its solidarity with the international community and its allies against all kinds of terrorism and violence.

"Our country will continue to provide all kinds of support to the UK in the fight against terrorism," it added.

The terror attack in London, which took place on the first anniversary of Brussels terror attack, has resulted in at least five deaths, including the suspected perpetrator, as well as some 40 injuries.
