Phnom Penh (FN), March 30 - An apology letter, dated Feb. 03, 2006, concerning the accusation that Prime Minister Hun Sen was the mastermind behind a deadly grenade attack against protesters in March 1997, signed by Sam Rainsy, has surfaced.

In it, Rainsy states "I regret accusing the Prime Minister of conspiring to launch a grenade attack on protesters on March 30, 1997 in front of the old National Assembly building and for accusing him of killing five dignitaries."

“I will consider this matter resolved and will not continue to publicly cast doubt and suspicion. Instead, I will work to prevent this kind of act from happening again,” he added.

The attack killed 17 and injured about 150 among the 200 protestors.

“We expect approximately 500 attendees at the annual memorial service honoring those who were killed in the grenade attack,” said Eng Chhay Eang, CNRP’s senior official.
