Phnom Penh (FN), April 3 – Today marks the 16th anniversary of World Press Freedom Day.

Cambodia’s Press Freedom Day's theme is “New Media, New Opportunities and Challenges: the Role of Media in Promoting Social Justice, Unity and Peace”.

Famous journalists in Cambodia recognized that the freedom of press release in Cambodia improves but Cambodian journalists still need to expand their capacity.

“Freedom of the press is growing if compared to 10 or 15 years ago,” said Pen Bona, President of the Club of Cambodian Journalists.

“The improvement stemmed from the growing number of media in Cambodia, both television and online system, and the improvement of quality of writing through public competition,” he added.

Huy Vannak, President of the Union of Journalist Federations of Cambodia stated that the freedom of press is better than before, but the role of media is still limited.

“Journalist shall develop oneself on general knowledge and technology to contribute to society and the world,” said Vannak.

Chhay Sophal, media professor and author, said that even though the freedom of press in Cambodia is not as great as in developed countries, Cambodia is great among the ASEAN Member States.

The Ministry of Information (MoI) today commemorated World Press Freedom Day at the MoI and Raffles Hotel Le Royal.

The celebration calls upon journalists from all media sector to come together and exchange ideas in order to further develop journalism in Cambodia.
