Phnom Penh (FN), June 1 – Over the past 3 years, 20 Cambodian UN peacekeepers have died or been injured during their mission, according to Sem Sovanney, Director-General of NCPFMEC.

“9 peacekeepers have been killed  and 11 injured in Mali and Central Africa," Sem stated during a UN Compensation Ceremony chaired by Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn .

“80,000 dollars in  compensation has been given to the family of Chan Somkum, who died in Mali.

The family of Luy Bunlong
received $70,000 after his death in Central Africa”, stated Minister Prak.

The minister added that he is deeply saddened for the loss of the courageous Cambodian soldiers.

Others have not received compensation, as their deaths were not within the conditions set by UN. However, the government has released funds for the families and assisted with funerals.

Cambodia has dispatched 4,689 peacekeepers since 2006.

They have been sent to the Sudanese Republic, South Sudan, Chad, Central Africa, Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, and Mali, according to the director-general.
