Phnom Penh (FN), June 19 - The Ministry of Environment (MoE) decided to enlist Phnom Yard as a natural-cultural heritage site, an area of approximately 32,000 hectares spreading over Pailin Province.

“The decision was made to protect the role of ecosystems, including natural and cultural resources of the area, the beautiful scenery, and values for the education, and scientific research,” according to MoE.

“The new heritage site will provide services for the sustainable use of natural as well as promoting the participation of local communities and the public to contribute to the management, protection and conservation of biodiversity and natural resources in the region,” it added.

This mountain was previously a war zone, which occupied by Khmer Rouge forces from 1975 until 1998.

Today, Cambodia has 47 protected areas with three biodiversity conservation areas.
