Phnom Penh (FN), July 7 - During the first half of 2017, Cambodian rice exports increased by 7%.

Cambodia has already sent nearly  300,000 tons of rice to the international market, and is largely recognized as one of the top rice producing nations in the world.

From January to June 2017, Cambodia exported 288,562 tons of rice, an increase of 7.6 percent compared to the same period of 2016, at 268,690 tons according to an official data report made available to Fresh News.

The data shows exports to nearly 60 countries, with France consuming nearly 40,000 tons and Poland with 25,000 tons. China, however, continues to be the single largest importer and consumer of Cambodian rice.

In 2017, the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of China agreed to increase the quota of rice exports to China to 200,000 tonnes, while in 2018, the governments of both countries, which are in close co-operation, have increased the rice quota to 300,000 tonnes.

By 2016, Cambodia had exported more than 500,000 tonnes of rice to the international market, while the Royal Government plans to boost rice exports to 1 million tons per year.
