Phnom Penh (FN), July 28 – Cambodian citizens and officials have expressed deep dismay and concern after the broadcast of a documentary entitled "The Cambodian Girls Sold for Sex by Their Mothers" was aired by two media outlets, CNN and ABC, in the United States.

The President of the Federal Union of Journalists of Cambodia (FUJC), Huy Vannak, claimed in a conference on Friday morning that the broadcast insults Cambodian women.

“It is an immoral action and unfair to the nation," stated Vannak.

“The broadcasting of (this documentary by) CNN and ABC will negatively impact Cambodia, whose people are known for their refreshing smile, friendly attitudes, and cultural tourism," he added.

The two American television channels reported from a sex trafficking hot spot, Svay Pak, located outside Phnom Penh.

Vannak contends that the area no longer exists and that the footage used in the reel is outdated.

He also disputes that it was not a Cambodian who sold her child, but was, instead, a Vietnamese woman.

FUJC has also issued an official letter to CNN to review their facts again.

CNN responded that they would take the issues to the board and has retracted Cambodia's name from the title of the news piece.

ABC News has yet to respond.
