Phnom Penh (FN), August 10 - Minister of Labor, Ith Sam Heng said Cambodia will send at least 1,000 workers to Hong Kong for the first time in late 2017, according to a press conference at the Ministry of Labor on Thursday morning.

“We plan to recruit 1,000 workers in the first project with a minimum wage in Hong Kong from $550, good working conditions, insurances, holiday, health and worker’s rights protection,” he added.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has granted licenses to six companies to manage and send Cambodian workers to Hong Kong.

The initial contract lasts 2 years, and the workers can renew the contract upon agreement with the employers.

Workers will receive instructions on living, rights, and other protections in Hong Kong, addition to protections and supports from Cambodian Consulate General in Hong Kong.

Law Chi Kwong, secretary of the Hong Kong Department of Labor and Welfare, said that Cambodian women will receive the same rights and working conditions as Hong Kong workers, including pregnancy protection, sickness insurance and additional bonus.

There are currently 1,150,000 Cambodian workers in Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore.
