Phnom Penh (FN), October 24 - The Constitutional Council has reviewed the amendments to the law on the seat allocation of the dissolved party, and confirmed that it is in conformity with the constitution, and all four laws were returned to the National Assembly for further proceeding before it is promulgated by Cambodian King.

The four proposed amendments on election laws include: Amendments to the Law on the Election of the Members of Parliament; Amendments to the Law on the Election of the Senate; Amendments to the Law on the Election of Commune Councils; Amendments to the Law on the Election of the Capital, Provincial, Municipal, District, and Khan Councils.

With 40 out of 61 votes among the senators, the Senate finally adopted the four proposed amendments on election law, which aimed to effectively allocate seats in the National Assembly when a political party is subject to dissolution.

Regarding the Amendments to the Law on the Election of the Members of Parliament, Article 138 clearly stipulates that: "if any political party declares seat renunciation or eliminated from the list of political parties or dissolved in accordance with the law on political parties, the list of candidates and all parliamentarians of that political party is no longer valid and neither merits.”

In the above case, the National Election Committee shall allocate those available seats within a maximum of 7 days to the parties who participated in the national election, except for political parties that give up seats or be removed from the list of political parties or be dissolved in accordance with the law on political parties...".

Prime Minister Hun Sen, president of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), said that if Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is dissolved under the charge of "committing treason”, CNRP's commune chiefs could retain the same position if they agree to join the CPP.

PM Hun Sen said up to more than 99% that the CNRP will be dissolved and that the dissolution will take place before the trial of Kem Sokha, CNRP’s president.
