Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 13 - George Edgar, European Union Ambassador to Cambodia, told labor union leaders in Cambodia that the EU has not taken any action by appeal of the former leader of the opposition party as well as civil society regarding to Cambodia's garment sector.

Instead, the EU will continue to work on solving the problem and to avoid the impact on the garment sector.

Sam Aun, President of Cambodian Labor Union Federation, said on Tuesday that the meeting with the EU Ambassador was aimed to discuss and promote the development of the national economy, while the textile sector was a priority issue in the talks.

The overall situation of the garment and footwear industry is improving, employing about 800,000 workers and has helped nearly 2 million people directly and indirectly, with a total export volume of more than $7 billion in 2016 and $5.6 billion in 9 months in 2017.

The union leaders also stressed the improvement of labor conditions in collaboration with partners, including the International Labor Organization, professional organizations, and trade unions that contribute to the improvement of working conditions.

Cambodian labor union leaders also thanked the EU for importing goods from Cambodia and requesting further expansion of orders to create jobs for the people as much as possible.
