Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 15 - The Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC), a Cambodian garment and footwear exporter that coordinates and promotes Cambodia's apparel and footwear exports, stated that European Union could not close the Cambodian market.

EU is a major market for Cambodia, and all of Cambodia's goods, except weapons, are allowed to be exported to EU by preferential tariffs. Its garments, footwear and rice products are exported to Europe for billions of dollars annually, according to GMAC.

The statement was made to rebut to the comments of former opposition leader Sam Rainsy saying that the EU will soon close the Cambodian market to punish the government.

"The EU suspend all aid in the framework of the cooperation agreement between the European Union and Cambodia and close the market not to import goods from Cambodia to 27 countries in the EU. Additionally, the suspension of visa issuance of the EU to Cambodian officials, as well as the family and its partners, could have led to the confiscation of their wealth that believed came from corrupted acts”, Sam Rainsy wrote on his Facebook page.
