Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 27 - The Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, on Wednesday, sent 14 workers to serve as domestic assistants at Hong Kong Special Administrative Region with a salary up to $570 for the first time.

Hong Kong needs about 1,000 domestic assistants. For the first phase today, Cambodia will send 14 female workers.

The beginning of the transaction was made after Hong Kong and Cambodia signed a memorandum of understanding on recruiting and sending Cambodian workers to work in Hong Kong on August 10, 2017.

The Royal Government of Cambodia has granted licenses to six companies to manage and recruit Cambodian workers to Hong Kong, according to Ith Sam Heng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training.

The initial contract lasts 2 years, and the workers can renew the contract upon agreement with the employers.

Workers will receive instructions on living, rights, and other protections in Hong Kong, addition to protections and supports from Cambodian Consulate General in Hong Kong.

Law Chi Kwong, secretary of Hong Kong Department of Labor and Welfare, said that Cambodian women will receive the same rights and working conditions as Hong Kong workers, including pregnancy protection, sickness insurance and additional bonus.

There are currently 1,150,000 Cambodian workers in Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Singapore.
