Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 10 - Tourism Minister Thong Khon said on Wednesday morning that Cambodia received 5.6 million international tourists, an increase of 11.6% in 2017.

Of those, more than 1.2 million are Chinese tourists, an increase of 46 percent, ranking the first.

He added that there are 15 airline companies, 3 are Cambodia’s and 12 are China’s, are operating Cambodia-China 155 scheduled flights per week (excluding approximately 50 Charter flights per week).

The three airports include Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, and Kang Keng International Airport in Sihanoukville province.

In response to the increasing number of visitors annually in Siem Reap, the Royal Government has built another new airport in Siem Reap, with a Chinese investment under a 55-year contract, worth an estimated $900 million.

The new airport will begin its construction in 2018 on a 700-hectare plot of land in Sout Nikom District, 50 kilometers from Siem Reap.

The project will be signed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Thursday.
