Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 16 - Several former Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) leaders, represented by Mao Monyvan, on Tuesday, submitted a letter to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court requesting to meet Kem Sokha, former CNRP leader detained in Tropang Phlong Correctional Center in Tbong Khmum province, after Sam Rainsy created a " National Movement”.

The movement is led by Sam Rainsy, Eng Chhay Eang, and Mu Sochua, according to a statement of Cambodia National Rescue Movement released on last Friday.

Mao Monyvan, Former CNRP Representative of Kampong Cham Province, and other former leaders including Ou Chanrith, Cheam Channy, Kong Kimhak, Te Chanmony, and some colleagues, have requested to meet Kem Sokha on the morning of January 19, 2018.

However, Phnom Penh Investigating Judge Ky Rithy has yet to decide on the request. He reported that he is currently reviewing Mao Monyvan's letter he received on Tuesday afternoon.

50 former CNRP members from Kem Sokha’s side did not support the illegal movement and announced to not involve. They remain working under the framework of CNRP under the leadership of Kem Sokha.

Yem Ponhearith, former lawmaker of CNRP, condemned the decision of the movement. He told Phnom Penh Post that he and a daughter of Kem Sokha worried that Kem Sokha and other CNRP members who is living in Cambodia will face punishment through the activities of the movement.

He continued that “if they propose activities which cause the problems, Kem Sokha will shoulder the responsibility”.

However, Eng Chhai Eang, co-Vice President of CNRP from Rainsy’s side, wrote on Facebook that “now, there are reactions from two sides against the movement – the Cambodian People Party (CPP) of Hun Sen and some former leaders of CNRP”.
