Phnom Penh (FN), March 13 – The Republic of Korea will assist Cambodia in building Cambodia-Korea Friendship Bridge crossing Mekong River in response to Prime Minister Hun Sen’s request, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ press release on Monday after the Korean Ambassador to Cambodia, Oh Nak Young, met with Cambodian Foreign Affairs Minister Prak Sokhonn late Friday.

Senior Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed his warm welcome to Oh Nak Young's return in diplomacy to Cambodia again after he left Cambodia for the past 10 years; and recalled a meeting on February 27, 2018 with Korean Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Yoon Soon-Gu, focusing on further strengthening the cooperation in both the ASEAN-Korea and Mekong-Korea bilateral frameworks.

Senior Minister recalled the correct decision of the premier to establish diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1997 amid countless hardships. He said that Cambodia will seek cooperation with other ASEAN countries to achieve Mekong-Korea Summit.

Additionally, Prak Sokhonn highlighted the Royal Government’s preparation for the visit of Korean President to ASEAN countries, specifically to Cambodia, which he considered as a new historical milestone and a major contribution to the strengthening of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries.

Senior Minister and Ambassador also discussed Joint Commission’s 4th Meeting to be held in the second semester of 2018; discussed the possibility of arranging the official visit of the Senior Minister to the Republic of Korea in conjunction with the Joint Commission’s Meeting; discussed the establishment of the commission to resolve the two countries' consular issues, the arrangements for diplomatic and security talks, the increasing cooperation to send Cambodian workers to Republic of Korea, and the increased exchange of tourism, trade, and investment.

Under the framework of ASEAN-Korea relations, Senior Minister Prak Sokhon highlighted Cambodia's coordinator position for ASEAN-Korea relations to organize the ASEAN-Korea Special Summit and efforts to coordinate with other ASEAN countries on the issue.

The ambassador appreciated Cambodia's active role in promoting ASEAN-Korea relations.

Regarding the situation of the Korean Peninsula, Senior Minister highly commended the initiative of the President of the Republic of Korea in reaching hand to North Korea and the recent positive developments of relationship and dialogue between the two Koreas as well as the recent tendency to reach US-North Korea Summit.

These are all the positive phases for the peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.
