Phnom Penh (FN), March 29 - National Election Committee (NEC)’s spokesman Hang Puthea said on Thursday that Cambodia's 6th mandate National Assembly (NA) election will be held as scheduled, although the opposition party leaders have called for the postpone.

"The former opposition party’s statements are just suggestions and does not have any impact on the date of the election”, stated Hang Puthea.

He added that NEC is implementing the law of Cambodia, not following any foreigners; NEC only serves the wills of people.

Mu Sochua, former vice-president of the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP), told Radio Free Asia (RFA) on Wednesday that her opposition group would demand a delay of the election if the opposition party could not take part in the upcoming national election. She also urged Canada to put pressure on Cambodian government.

The date of the election was announced by the Royal Government of Cambodia on July 29, 2018, and the NEC on Wednesday issued another announcement, leaving 15 days for political parties to register for the national election. The registration period starts from April 30 to May 14, 2018.

Until now, 37 political parties are officially recognized by the Ministry of Interior, yet no one knows how many political parties will participate in the upcoming election.
