Kampong Thom (FN), June 11 – Prime Minister Hun Sen announced to propose to China for another road connecting Koh Kong province to Battambang’s Samlot through Pursat’s Veal Veng that will cost approximately $200 million, speaking on Monday at the inauguration ceremony for the official use of the reconstruction of National Road 6 from Thnal Keng Kampong Cham province to Ang Krong Siem Reap province, with the length of 248 km under China’s preferential buyer's credit loan.

“This road proposal, maybe in 2018 or 2019, will fully connect Cambodia-Thailand border, as it only remains 200km from Koh Kong to Battambang region that will cost $200 million,” stated the premier.

It is worth reminding that in the past, Koh Kong, Pursat, and Battambang, the southwest to northwest of Cambodia, used to be battlefields; however, as today Cambodia is peaceful and stable, people need infrastructure to commute and transport.

Prime Minister Hun Sen reiterated Cambodia’s need of strategic partner like China. He stated that the economic growth of China not only prospers the Chinese, but also helps develop other countries, including Cambodia.

Cambodia benefits abundantly from President Xi’s one belt one road initiative.

According to the premier, Cambodia will have two new roads in the future, including a 100-km road from Kompong Thom to Kratie with a new bridge to cross Mekong River in Kratie; and a road and bridge to cross Tonle Sap connecting Kompong Chhnang to Kompong Thom’s Baray. He recommended to use the Chinese infrastructure formula like in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China so that it would not block water current of Tonle Sap.

As of today, China has assisted Cambodia in building 3,000 km of roads.
