TOKYO, May 1 (CGTN) -- Crown Prince Naruhito was enthroned on Wednesday as Japan's new emperor, one day after his father Akihito's historic abdication.

59-year-old Naruhito was handed three sacred Japanese symbols – a sword, a jewel and a mirror that are believed to have originated from ancient mythology – at a ceremony.
