MEXICO CITY, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Latin America has registered more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases as the pandemic spreads through the region, with Brazil and Peru together accounting for over half of the caseload.

Brazil on Sunday reported a death toll of 2,462, after 115 patients died of the virus in the past 24 hours, and its total number of infections hit 38,654, the country's Health Ministry said.

Peru reported 1,208 new cases of infection, bringing its total caseload to 15,628, with 400 fatalities.

Chile's total confirmed cases reached 10,088, with 133 fatalities, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

Chile is conducting an average of 4,000 tests a day and has 570 respirators available throughout its public and private healthcare system, said Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza.

Ecuador reported 9,468 COVID-19 cases with 474 deaths. The past 24 hours saw 446 new cases and 18 more deaths.
The Dominican Republic has registered 4,680 cases and 226 deaths.

Cuba on Sunday reported two deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 34, while 49 new infections brought the island's caseload to 1,035.

Cuban experts expect the pandemic to reach its peak of infection on the island in mid-May.

Mexico has registered 8,261 cases and 686 deaths. Its health authorities on Sunday denounced an increase in attacks against doctors and nurses, presumably provoked by fear and ignorance of the pandemic.
