MOSCOW, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia has reported 4,268 COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 47,121 as of Monday, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement.

The daily increase is down from 6,060 on Sunday and 4,785 on Saturday but is still higher than all other daily counts, the center's data showed.

The death toll climbed to 405, up 44 from the previous day, while 3,446 people have recovered, including 155 in the past 24 hours.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit area, confirmed 2,026 new cases over the last 24 hours, taking its total to 26,350.

Russia announced its first two COVID-19 cases on Jan. 31, with cases increasing significantly since the end of March. The total number topped 10,000 on April 9, 20,000 on Tuesday, 30,000 on Friday and 40,000 on Sunday.

Russia's consumer rights and human wellbeing watchdog said in a statement on Monday that 135,198 people were under medical observation as of Sunday.

It said more than two million COVID-19 laboratory tests have been carried out so far, including about 103,000 over the last 24 hours.
