JAKARTA, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government reported that 16 new deaths of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were registered on Tuesday, raising the total fatalities in the archipelagic country to 1,007, the highest in Southeast Asia.

Jakarta, home to some 10 million people, suffers the highest number of deaths totaling 443, followed by East Java 155, West Java 98, Central Java 66, Banten 56 and the rest recorded in other areas.

There were 484 new confirmed cases of the COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of infections to 14,749.

Meanwhile, 182 more people have been discharged from hospitals, making the total number of recovered patients at 3,063.
So far, the number of suspected COVID-19 cases in Indonesia is 32,147.
