GAZA, Jan 2 (CGTN) -Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes on targets in Gaza in retaliation for two rockets fired from inside Gaza early on Saturday, according to a local media report citing the army.

In a brief message to the press, IDF said they were "currently carrying out strikes" in Gaza, the Palestinian territory controlled by the Hamas.

According to AFP, the strikes targeted an al-Qassam Brigades site west of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.

The two rockets fired Saturday morning from the Gaza Strip fell into the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Israel's Tel Aviv, the Israeli army said, adding that no sirens were triggered and no interceptions were made.

The rocket launch came four days after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz held a meeting in Israel.
