CANBERRA, March 20 (Sputnik) - Australia is providing an additional $15.5 million in military assistance to Kiev and will also provide Ukraine with $22 million in emergency humanitarian assistance, the Australian government announced on Sunday.

“Following the results of negotiations between the Prime Minister [Scott Morrison] and Minister of Defense [Peter Dutton] and their Ukrainian counterparts, it is clear that Ukraine’s need for military assistance remains urgent and ongoing. In response, the Ministry of Defense allocated an additional 21 million US dollars. [about 15.5 USD] support for a defensive military aid package for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, bringing Australia’s total military aid to $91 million at the moment,” the Australian government said in a statement released by the Australian Foreign Ministry. According to the release, the military aid will include “additional supplies from the Australian Defense Force’s stockpile.”

Australia is also providing additional humanitarian aid to Kiev, the Australian government said. “Today, the Morrison government is providing an additional A$30 million. [22.2 USD] in the provision of emergency humanitarian assistance. This contribution will go towards protecting women, children, the elderly and the disabled, and the total amount we have already committed is A$65 million,” the government said in a statement.

Australia also provides funds through non-governmental organizations through the Australian Humanitarian Partnership, as well as the United Nations Population Fund and the World Food Program to support civilians in Ukraine.
