Beijing (FN), Oct. 17 – Speaking at the National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on October 16, Chinese president Xi touched on the centenary goal of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and modernization of National Defense and the military.

“We continue to enhance political loyalty in the military, strengthen the military through reform, science and technology, and personnel training, and run the military in accordance with the law,” Xi underscored.

Xi also underlined the CPC’s strategic task to elevate its people’s armed forces to world-class standards and achieve the centenary of the PLA in 2027.

On that occasion, the CPC also pledged to enhance the military’s strategic capabilities for defending China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests, Xi said, [...] “We will intensify troop training and enhance combat preparedness across the board to see that our people’s armed forces can fight and win.”

Xi continued, the people’s armed forces have the confidence and the ability to safeguard China’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, to provide strategic support for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, and to make yet greater contributions to world peace and development.

Established in 1927 and reconstituted in 1949 with the end of the Chinese Civil War and founding of the People’s Republic of China, the PLA is the armed wing of China’s ruling party. China’s military modernization drive began in earnest in 1978 during the “reform and opening” period ushered in by Chinese former leader Deng Xiaoping.
