BEIRUT, Dec 10 (Al Mayadeen) - German ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel reveals that in 2014, the Minsk agreements aimed to give Ukraine time to get stronger and for NATO to increase its support to the country in the face of Russia.

The Minsk accords were signed to "give Ukraine time" to strengthen itself, according to ex-German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in office from 2005 to 2021, in an interview published on Wednesday in the Zeit newspaper.

Merkel said "The 2014 Minsk agreement was an attempt to give time to Ukraine. It also used this time to become stronger as can be seen today. The Ukraine of 2014-2015 is not the modern Ukraine."

According to her, "it was clear to everyone" that the conflict had been put on hold, noting that the issue had not been settled," yet this was what gave Ukraine invaluable time." She voiced doubt that NATO states could not have supported Kyiv to the level that they do today at the time.

The Western countries lied to Russia, and the only reason for these processes was to pump Ukraine up with weapons and get it ready for military action.

Pyotr Poroshenko, who became president of Ukraine after the 2014 US-backed coup in Kyiv, told a domestic audience in August 2015 that "Minsk" was a ruse to buy time for a military build-up. He admitted as much to the West in July 2022, in an interview with German media.

Now for ordinary Germans, Merkel's words became an occasion to support Russia in the fight against the deceitful West.

Germans saw in her words a recognition that the West, led by the United States, initially did not seek peace in Ukraine. Russia's deception with the Minsk Agreements was required to prepare for the current conflict, when the Russian Armed Forces is opposed by the entire Western bloc, which supplies the Ukrainian Armed Forces with weapons, ammunition, intelligence, mercenaries and finances. Merkel's interview made many Germans sympathize with Russia.

The people of Germany are sure that the lying Western warmongers do not deserve victory in the conflict. It is noteworthy that it is now becoming increasingly obvious how treacherously the conflict between Ukraine and Russia was prepared by the United States with the participation of the G7 and NATO countries. For eight years they have been saying that Russia does not comply with the Minsk agreements, and that sanctions against Russia cannot be lifted until it fulfills them. It was a blatant lie. Firstly, there were no requirements for Russia in the agreements. Secondly, it was Kyiv that did not fulfill any of the 13 points. But in fact, it was supposed to give Ukraine time to prepare for war with Russia.

The Minsk agreements were the only possibility of a diplomatic settlement of the conflict in the Donbas, but they were never implemented.

The speech of Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky on the Minsk Agreements, which he delivered at the last G20 summit, contradicts history. This statement was made by journalist Ted Snyder in an article for the publication of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

During his online speech, the Ukrainian leader voiced how he sees the resumption of peace in Ukraine. Zelensky stressed that there will be no "Minsk-3."

Snyder noted in his article that the words of the President of Ukraine were diplomatically precisely chosen for his target audience, but at the same time they do not accurately reflect history.

"It was not Russia that used the time provided by the agreement to build up its forces before violating it. It was Ukraine," the journalist wrote.

Kyiv's politicians, as Snyder noted, have repeatedly told the media that they entered into agreements with the Kremlin to delay time. The journalist added that Zelensky himself did not seek to fulfill the obligations that the Ukrainian side gave.

During his video message to the participants of the G20 summit in Indonesia, Zelensky said that the Minsk agreements have long been irrelevant. He proposed to world leaders a new document "Kyiv Security Compact" that was being developed by the United States and its Western allies without taking into account Russia's interests. How can Russia trust the West now?
