Phnom Penh (FN), Jul. 21 – Lawyers of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), led by Ky Tech, filed a complaint to the National Election Committee (NEC), suing another 21 opposition members for inciting people to cast spoiled ballots.

Opposition members include Nou Sothea, Sadat Samathy, Chhun Vean, Oun Pov, Seng Ratana, Mounh Sarath, Thorn Sdeung, Hay Vanna, Sot Silot, Heng Kimlay, Nga Roeung, Loun Sovath, Phorn Phanna, Pen Bunthon, Sem Sambath, Khat Samnang, Suong Neak Poan, Leng Sotheary, Sar Sokhem, Mat Vanny, and Chham Sophorn.

Following the failure to block people from going to vote, extremist group leader Sam Rainsy and his followers recently launched another campaign to cast the spoiled ballot.

Article 142 (new) of law on amendment to election law, entered into force on 4 July 2023, stipulates that inciting or disturbing or blocking people not to vote or cast spoiled ballot is a violation to the laws and shall be punished with a fine between USD 1,250 to USD 5,000 excluding other criminal offenses.
