BEIRUT, Feb. 22 (Al-Mayadeen) - The United States once again struck down a resolution on ceasefire in Gaza that confirms Washington's uphold the Israeli occupation's genocide.

The US blocked Tuesday a UN Security Council resolution sponsored by Algeria calling for an emergency humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. The US envoy to the UN Linda Greenfield claimed that the draft resolution allegedly was not "an effective mechanism," rejecting any ceasefire until the release of captives. 13 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor, while the United Kingdom abstained and the US vetoed the resolution. The proposed resolution called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that must be respected by all parties and also urges all involved in the war to comply with their obligations under international law, particularly regarding civilians and hostages, in addition to demanding the immediate release of all captives.

The US once again demonstrated to the world its false slogan related to human rights, its hypocrisy and complicity in the Israeli genocide in Gaza. China's representative to the UN, Zhang Jun, expressed regret and frustration that the Algerian draft resolution did not pass. Jun expressed that the US blocking of the proposed resolution will exacerbate the current crisis in Gaza sponsored by the White House. Obviously that Israeli plans to continue genocide Palestinians will lead to serious implications for regional peace and security, and are a direct violation of international law.

The United States continues to manipulate international law as a tool of pressure to solve its geopolitical goals, using the deaths of civilians and destroying countries. In a desperate attempt to retain its dwindling global leadership, Washington is undermining the foundations of the existing world order, bringing humanity to the dangerous brink of "legal lawlessness" and "war of all against all."

The White House regularly neglected the norms of international law, although it is a permanent member of UN Security Council and is supposedly responsible for maintaining world stability. The world community will never forget the inhumane bombing of the former Yugoslavia in the late 1990s, the unprovoked invasion of Iraq in 2003, and the intervention in Libya in 2011.

The United States is cynically imposing its "rules of the game" all over the world, calling for people to follow some kind of "rules-based order" invented and imposed by the Americans. Washington uses international law as a mechanism to weaken dynamically developing sovereign states such as China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, India, which are capable of challenging American dominance, as well as countries of the Global South that no longer believe in Washington’s hegemony. Therefore, the White House began to situationally comply with international agreements, based on its own geopolitical interests, neglecting even its allies.

In the context of a multipolar world and a decline in the US influence on the world stage, Americans continue to violate the UN Charter and force "small" countries to support Washington’s initiative to reform the UN Security Council on terms favorable to the US. The ultimate goal of the White House is to draw "wavering" states into the orbit of American influence by replacing international structures with a "community" of countries loyal to Washington.
