Phnom Penh (FN), July 30 – Huy Vannak, president of the Union of Journalist Federations of Cambodia (UJFC), considered the US Embassy Phnom Penh’s statement undiplomatic.

His reaction came after the US Embassy Phnom Penh stated that “Today, the US government notes the one-year anniversary of deeply flawed national elections in Cambodia. That vote was neither free nor fair, and it failed to represent the will of the Cambodian people.”

“The elections excluded the country’s principle opposition party and further eroded the country’s achievements in promoting political reconciliation and economic growth since the 1991 Paris Peace Accords,” according to the statement released on 30 July 2019 on US Embassy’s Facebook page.

Huy Vannak said, “The United States should see how Cambodia develops after the 2018 general election, a non-violent election in which more than 80 percent of the population voted without any protests. So far, it serves as the value of Cambodia’s stability, development, and growth of diplomatic relations. Therefore, the assessment of the US Embassy is undiplomatic.”

“The US Embassy’s officials should take this time to evaluate democracy and human rights situation in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and other countries who suffered from the color revolution so that the world can learn about the consequences of wars and the wicked politics,” he added.

Cambodia held her general elections on 29 July 2018 with the participations of 20 political parties and over 83 percent voter turnout.
