Phnom Penh (FN), Aug. 10 – The construction of the new ASEAN Secretariat building began in January 2018 and was completed in December 2018, costing USD42.5 million, according to a press release issued on Saturday by Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

On 8 August 2019, Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn attended the inauguration ceremony of the new ASEAN Secretariat building in Jakarta, Indonesia, together with other Foreign Ministers and representatives of ASEAN Member States.

The inauguration of the new ASEAN Secretariat Building was presided over by H.E. Joko Widodo, president of Indonesia and ambassadors of ASEAN and dialogue partners.

“Minister Prak Sokhonn also attended the 52nd Anniversary of ASEAN. The celebrations included the placement of a time capsule containing the aspirations and wishes of ASEAN Leaders. The messages expressed their hopes and expectations for the ASEAN Community Building process as well as the future direction for the well-being and prosperity of ASEAN people for the next 25 years. These messages will be opened in 2042 when the ASEAN Community is 75 year old,” according to the press release.
