Phnom Penh (FN), Oct. 24 – The newly appointed US Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy informed Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn that the US does not interfere in internal affairs of any countries and that his mission to Cambodia is to support the kingdom and be an important partner, speaking in a courtesy call to Cambodian foreign minister at the ministry on Thurday.

Koy Koung, spokesperson of the ministry, told the press that: “Ambassador Patrick has clearly stated that the US does not have any policies to interfere in the internal affairs of any countries. The US’s position, with himself as the representative to Cambodia, will support and be the important partner of Cambodia.”

Minister Prak Sokhonn warmly welcomed the presence of the Ambassador W. Patrick Murphy; congratulated him on the appointment of US Ambassador to Cambodia; and wished him a fruitful mission.

It is worth recalling that the Ambassador has expressed his commitment to strengthen the US-Cambodia relationship, according to US Embassy Phnom Penh’s Facebook page dated Wednesday.

“Today [23 October 2019], Ambassador W. Patrick Murphy met with Prime Minister Hun Sen at the Peace Palace. The two discussed long-standing US prosperous, democratic, and sovereign Cambodia,” the US Embassy wrote on Facebook page yesterday.

“Ambassador Murphy expressed his hope that steps can be taken in the coming weeks and months to strengthen this important relationship between our two countries and peoples.”

The US’s mission to Cambodia supports efforts to combat terrorism, promote democracy and human rights, foster economic development, and bring to justice those most responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed under the Khmer Rouge regime.
