Tbong Khmum (FN), Dec. 24 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen urged Vietnam to import more from Cambodia, addressing Tuesday at the inauguration of Cambodia-Vietnam “Da Market” in Tbong Khmum, which he co-chaired with Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Trinh Dinh Dung.

“We have trade imbalances that Cambodia imports more from Vietnam but exports less. So I would like to urge Vietnam to increase its purchases from Cambodia. I call on Vietnam to buy 300,000 tonnes of Cambodian rice and other products […],” said Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Prime minister hoped that Vietnam will import Cambodian products, which were recently exhibited in Phnom Penh and Kampot, including mangoes, bananas and other items to serve Vietnam’s daily needs and supply millions of tourists visiting Vietnam.

Cambodia imports from Vietnam iron, gasoline, textiles, clothing and agricultural products such as fish, meat, vegetable, fruit while export to Vietnam cashew nuts, rubber, wood-made products.

According to the premier, Cambodia-Vietnam bilateral trade reached USD 4.7 billion in 2018, increased by 24 percent compared to 2017. During the first six months of 2019, the trade reached USD 2.7 billion. The two countries aim to reach USD 5 billion per annum.

In terms of investment, Council for the Development of Cambodia reported that from 1994 to August 2019, Cambodia has approved 84 Vietnamese investment projects worth in total approximately USD 2.5 billion, of which about two-thirds accounted for agriculture.
