Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 12 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will pay official visit to Cuba in March 2020, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Koy Kuong on Wednesday.

On 11 February 2020, the newly appointed Cuban Ambassador to Cambodia Liurka Rodriguez Bariios met with Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn at the Cambodian ministry.

“Both sides discuss the upcoming visit of prime minister to Cuba after his participation to ASEAN-US Special Summit,” Koy Kuong told the press.

“The visit of Premier Hun Sen to Cuba will reflect the strengthening and expanding friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and the Republic of Cuba which happen on the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Cambodian-Cuban diplomatic relations,” the spokesperson quoted Cuban ambassador as saying.

In a courtesy call of Cuban Ambassador to Cambodia Liurka Rodriguez on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in late January 2020, both sides recalled the visit by Premier Hun Sen to Cuba in September 1999, when president Fidel Castro bestowed on him the Order of Jose Marti, the highest awarded by the Cuban state.

Cuba and the Kingdom of Cambodia established diplomatic ties on 15 April 1960 under the reign of the late King Norodom Sihanouk.

As medical aid is Cuba’s most prominent diplomatic gesture in the developing world, Cuba aids Cambodia in the fields of health care, particularly supplying medical equipment to military hospital.

To celebrate the anniversary in 2020, Cambodia and Cuba hold cultural and journalistic exchanges, exhibitions of photographies and audiovisuals, festivals, demonstrating the nature of the ties.
