Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 21 – Cambodia is preparing to build a deep port for direct ocean freight to and from the United States, according to Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol on Friday.

“We are conducting a study on 17 meters deep port at Sihanoukville for direct freight to and from the United States,” Minister Sun Chanthol spoke in a press conference held at the Council of Ministers.

The new port can accommodate the docking of 93 percent of container ships from the Pacific. As of today, many ships require transits in either Singapore or Hong Kong before arriving Cambodia, the minister said.
