Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 13 – Cambodian Nationality Party (CNP) and Cambodian Youth Party (CYP) subsequently issued separate statements in response to the statement made by the US Ambassador to Cambodia on Kem Sokha’s treason trial.

CNP urged the public not to be misled by the false statement of the US Ambassador. CNP said in a statement yesterday that they have involved in the trial process since the first day of trial (15 January) until 12 March 2020. CNP observes that all the involving parties, during the debates in trial, did not make any statements harming the United States, any foreign states, or organisations.

President of the Cambodian Youth Party Pich Sros echoed that he also witnessed Kem Sokha’s treason trial and confirmed that the trial processes did not affect any other countries.

In his statement dated 13 March 2020, Pich Sros said the US ambassador to Cambodia’s statement entirely contradicts the truth and lacks of studies on the facts.

US Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy, on Thursday (12 March), stated that he is troubled by fabricated conspiracy theories at the treason trial of opposition party leader Kem Sokha.

“We are troubled to see prosecutors that have introduced into the courtroom fabricated conspiracy theories about the United States,” the ambassador told reporters after attending Kem Sokha’s treason trial on Thursday.

Shortly after the ambassador’s statement, the spokesperson of the prosecution attached to Phnom Penh Municipal Court responded that:

“The prosecutors did not accuse the United State, or any other states, or agencies. The prosecutors did accuse Kem Sokha of conspiring with foreigners in accordance with the legal procedures of the Kingdom of Cambodia,” according to the press release dated Thursday.

Kem Sokha, leader of the court-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party, has been accused of conspiring with foreigners to topple the legitimate Royal Government of Cambodia. If found guilty, Sokha faces up to 30 years imprisonment.
The trial has been participated and observed by the local and international public.
