Phnom Penh (FN), Apr. 20 – Cambodia’s Health Ministry Spokesperson Or Vandine confirmed Monday in a press conference that a warm weather could not hinder the spread of Covid-19 virus, yet Covid-19 spreads faster in cold weather.

"It does not necessarily mean Covid-19 does not spread in a warm weather; infections and fatality still happen. Do not be careless and never think that a hot climate like in Cambodia will hinder the spread Covid-19,” Vandine warned.

She continued that Cambodia reported low cases and zero deaths compared to other developed countries, thanks to a timely effective measures and guidance imposed by the Royal Government.

Dr Li Ailan, Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Head of the WHO Country Office to the Kingdom of Cambodia, also at the press conference, said the reason a developed country with advanced health system faced huge number of reported case is due to community spread.

"Cambodia is just at the beginning phase of the outbreak. The kingdom has yet experienced community spread," she said.

Both the WHO representative and the spokesperson continued to urge Cambodian people to remain cautious and to implement measures and regulations laid down by the Royal Government of Cambodia, particularly practicing social distancing; self-hygiene; and minimising people to people contact.

“Subsequent recoveries does not mean the Kingdom is safe from Covid-19,” Vandine warned, adding that: "Myanmar previously had only a few cases of Covid-19, but nowadays the number of infected people reached 111, indicating the extremely rapid outbreak.”

Vandine says vigilance against the virus must remain at high levels to prevent complacency.

As of 20 April 2020, the Kingdom has confirmed 122 cases in total. At least 107 or 87.7 percent have recovered.
