Phnom Penh (FN), May 4 – The International Day of the Midwife, celebrated on 5 May every year is the day to highlight the vital role of midwives in saving lives. The theme for the International Day of the Midwife this year is «Follow the data, Invest in midwives». This year’s theme emphasizes the central role of midwives as critical to improve the quality of sexual reproductive and maternal health care and ensure the universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights to achieve national health development goals, the Commitments of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), as well as the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

«Midwives form a critical part of the health care workforce, even and especially during global pandemics. Midwives continue to stand in the frontlines putting themselves at risk to ensure that women, babies and their families can receive essential services in the safest possible way. They must be protected and supported to continue providing the life-saving care to childbearing women and their babies,” according to a joint Op-Ed seen by Fresh News on Wednesday.»
