Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 6 – At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Wang Yi, Cambodia’s Top Diplomat and delegations departed to China on Sunday to attend the Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers Meeting and 6th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation, to be held on 7 and 8 June 2021 in Chongqing, People's Republic of China.

The Special ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting is held as part of the celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, according to Foreign Affairs Ministry’s press release dated 4 June 2021.

During this commemorative gathering, the Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and China are expected to review the development of ASEAN-China practical cooperation in various areas and discuss on further enhancement of ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership in the present context of COVID19 pandemic and emerging challenges. They may also exchange views on regional and international issues of common interests.

During the 6th MLC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on 8 June, the MLC Foreign Ministers will evaluate the progress made for the past five years of cooperation, chart future directions for widening cooperation; particularly at the time of COVID19 pandemic, and further deepen the bonds of friendship and mutual support between the Mekong Countries and China, in the spirit of promoting sustainable development, and social and cultural interconnections in the Mekong-Lancang region.

In conjunction with the above meetings, Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn will pay a working visit to China, during which he will hold bilateral talks with His Excellency State Councilor Wang Yi. At the end of the meeting, the two Foreign Ministers will preside over the signing ceremony of two documents, namely:

1. MOU on Cooperation in the Field of Telecommunication and Information and Communication Technology between Ministry of Post and Telecommunication of Cambodia and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.

2. Executive Programme on Cultural Cooperation between Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia and Ministry of Culture of China.

Availing the opportunity of his stay in Chongqing, Minister Prak Sokhonn plans to have bilateral meetings with some other Foreign Ministers face-to-face in order to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and relations.
